Guests at the Makalei Golf Club can appreciate the natural surroundings of Kona with the native plant species and wildlife, including peacocks, pheasants and wild turkeys that can be found on this Hawaii Golf Course.  There's also a grand view of Hawaii Island and of Mount Haleakala all the way on Maui, the next island over!

Architect Dick Nugent designed Makalei Golf Club to incorporate the distinctive, beautiful Hawaiian environment of native trees, wildlife, and natural features such as lava tubes and cinder cones to create a challenging layout that can't help but inspire any golfer. The course offers 4 sets of tees that provide a great challenge to golfers of every skill level. This par 72 dandy, located on the upper slopes of Mount Hualalai, provides panoramic views of the Kohala Coast, so breathtaking that every round of golf will be a memorable experience. The Clubhouse has an elevation of 1,950 feet above sea level, and the 10th hole tee box is 2,850 feet above sea level.

The ‘Cave of Makalei’ is a legend about Makalei, a young boy who discovered a water source for his family and enabled them to survive and prosper. As the story goes, a young boy came across a deep hole, partially covered by large stone slabs. The wind rushed out of the hole and he ran to tell his father. His father moved the stones and saw a deep cave extending into the mountain. In honor of his sons’ discovery he named the cave “He Ano Makalei”, which means Consecrated to Makalei.
